Transit for a Stronger Economy

Key decisions about public transit will be decided very soon. Legislators need to hear from you that the time is now to secure the funding for expanded bus, rail, and safe connections by walking and bicycling. You can take action by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Urge your legislators to support an increase of 3/4 cent in the regional sales tax to expand investment in transit, including bus, light rail, and safe, accessible walking and bicycling routes. A sales tax is the way that nearly all US regions fund transit. Most regions impose a full penny for transit.

Important votes will be taken starting this week.

Transit systems in the Twin Cities region and across the state are not adequate to meet the demand or the need. Without new funding transit service cannot grow and it could even shrink!

A 3/4 cent increase in the regional sales tax will provide new travel options for everyone -- including the people who need them the most -- seniors, people with a disability, and low income workers. More transit will also create jobs and reduce traffic congestion. Networks for walking and bicycling help kids get to school safety and help everyone get exercise.

The Governor's budget recommendations are a good start but we need you to contact your legislators and let them know that a full 3/4 cent increase will build and operate the system the region and state really needs.
